One of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings is now on sale at Redbrik.
Towers Lodge, situated on Sandygate Road, is a Grade II listed building immersed in Sheffield history. Built in the late 1890s, Towers Lodge is a delightful two bed property that forms part of a larger estate also consisting of a bigger family home.
Originally built for Christopher D. Leng, son of highly respected Sheffield Telegraph editor, W.C Leng, the two properties have been used for many purposes since their construction in 1896.
Christopher succeeded his father as joint owner of the newspaper following his death in 1902. He was also an agriculturist and had the house built in what was then a rural situation with a small dairy farm attached. He set up a company, The Sheffield Model Dairy Ltd., which applied modern dairy farming methods to produce its own dairy products for retail.
Christopher was a prominent local figure; a keen golfer, he was influential in founding the nearby Hallamshire Golf Club which he opened in 1897.
Following Leng’s death in 1921, The Towers and The Towers Lodge went on to be used as a temporary headquarters for the Sheffield tool firm Spear & Jackson when their offices were bombed during World War II.
In 1954, Sheffield City Council opened the house as a centre for handicapped children. Then, in 1996, the house and lodge were purchased and restored and is now back in use as a private residence.
Constructed by architects Flockton and Gibbs, Towers Lodge is a striking building that was built in the Scottish Baronial style.
With inspiration from Medieval castles, tower houses and the French Renaissance châteaux, the building takes its name from the large conical turret which features prominently on the front of the building, making this an instantly recognisable home.
The current owner has sympathetically restored the property, combining an abundance of original features including stone mullion windows, detailed architraves and a stunning spiral staircase.
The property, which comes with an attached gateway, offers a modern kitchen/diner, two double bedrooms, and a family bathroom making this a fantastic opportunity to own a part of Sheffield history.
Towers Lodge also offers the potential to create off road parking within the low maintenance garden.
