The perfect place by the fire

Beat the winter blues and create a sense of warmth and luxury in your home by introducing a new statement fireplace.

A fireplace acts as a beautiful focal point for your living space but with so many styles to choose from selecting a fireplace can be overwhelming. Here we take a look at some of the latest designs and provide a little inspiration for this all important purchase.

While there are numerous styles and types to choose from, the three most popular varieties by fuel type are gas, electric and wood burning. Within these there are various designs available including some incredible suspended, double-sided and freestanding options.

Gas Fireplaces

Gas fireplaces are still very popular in the UK despite talk of the use of gas domestically being phased out as part of climate change efforts over the long term. It’s not hard to see why they remain in favour. The effect of the heat is almost instant, they are affordable, they don’t require a brick built chimney and offer a cleaner burn than coal or wood. Maintenance however is important to protect against carbon monoxide leaks and they should be installed by a qualified and registered fitter.

Landscape gas fires with a glass or steel trim look modern whilst frameless models can be inset into the wall to give a very contemporary look. Older properties may suit a more traditional look and the new gas powered stove-style fires can give the feel of a wood burner without the effort of burning logs or coal.

Electric Fireplaces

Electric fires have evolved significantly in recent years. They now take advantage of modern LED lighting technology to mimic flame effects almost as good as the real thing. They are now able to offer a higher heat output that is low maintenance and energy efficient. This type of fireplace can be wall mounted or free standing and they don’t need to be flued so are a good option for apartments. Be sure to check the heat output if you are wanting the fire to warm the room as some models are decorative only.

Log Burners

Wood burners offer unparalleled heat output and nothing beats the ambience provided by a real fire. Their design and efficiency has come a long way in the past few years and now stylish, ultra efficient designs are much more affordable.

The downside is you’ll need to ensure a constant supply of fuel, regular maintenance is needed and high specification flues and chimneys are required. Log burners can be freestanding, inset into a fireplace or even fitted into a corner for maximum use of space.

Double-Sided and Suspended

A double-sided fireplace provides the wow factor in a larger room, ideal for larger kitchen/living/dining spaces. It can be used as a central feature to divide a room and they are usually open flame gas chimney fires or balanced flue gas fires.

If money is no object then a custom made double-sided fireplace from a specialist company like CVO Fire could take your living space to the next level. Instant luxury can also be provided by a suspended fire, which often have a ceiling hung canopy above giving the fire a floating effect. These are usually powered by bio-ethanol although suspended log burners are also available.
