Blog: Rightmove

Rightmove has launched a great new TV ad, ‘My Dream Home’ is the latest in a line of creative ads promoting the popular search site and it cetainly makes us want to start searching! The internet has transformed the way that prospective buyers look for homes. Now before you even view a property you can check out local schools, take a virtual walk down the street, work out the distance to the local train station and tweet for information about the neighbourhood.

When Rightmove started back in 2000 many people predicted that estate agents with a high street presence would be obsolete in five years’ time. When starting REDBRIK we did think about whether an office was really required, however we feel our office is vital to demonstrate to customers what we are all about, showcase properties and provide a hub for friendly customer service. Our stylish office certainly receives many compliments on how different it feels different in comparison to other agents, so for us it is important to have a high street presence. Having said that, the internet has totally changed estate agency by offering unbiased information to help prospective buyers make informed decisions, which can only be a good thing and estate agents need to stay ahead of the curve or be left behind.

One area that has definitely declined is newspaper advertising, especially the use of local newspapers for property advertising. Figures in the Guardian newspaper show advertising in regional newspapers has seen a double digit decline, with property advertising specifically reducing by almost 10% in the past year alone. Here at REDBRIK we don’t feel that local newspaper advertising is key to selling every property, preferring instead to focus on effective use of online search engines, quality promotional material and good use of our customer databases.

We do offer clients the option of newspaper display space and on the right occasion we would recommend it, however only one client has chosen to do so thus far and our sales figures demonstrate that for most properties it makes no difference at all. This is still quite a controversial approach when most other agents take space in the local papers and push their clients in that direction, however we simply don’t feel this is the best use of our customer’s hard earned money.
